Timber Retaining Wall Cost in Sydney
Realistic pricing for treated pine and hardwood sleeper retaining walls across Sydney, plus the factors that decide your final quote.
Understanding Timber Retaining Wall Cost
The timber retaining wall cost in Sydney is usually quoted per square metre of wall face. Where a treated pine sleeper wall lands within that pricing comes down to the wall height, the timber grade and how much excavation and drainage the slope demands. A low garden terrace is far quicker to build than a tall structural wall holding back a driveway - get in touch for a free, exact quote.
Timber remains one of the most popular retaining materials in Sydney because it is affordable, quick to install and blends naturally into garden settings. Treated pine sleepers suit most residential terracing, while durable hardwood sleepers cost more but give a longer life and a heavier, premium look. Whichever you choose, drainage behind the wall is what really determines how long it lasts.

What Affects the Cost
- Wall height — taller walls need deeper posts, thicker sleepers and often engineering.
- Timber choice — treated pine versus more expensive, longer-lasting hardwood.
- Drainage — ag-line, aggregate and geo-fabric behind the wall to stop water build-up.
- Excavation — rock, clay or a steep slope makes digging slower and dearer.
- Site access for machinery, sleepers, concrete and spoil removal.
- Engineering, council approval and set-out for walls over about 600mm.
- Steps, returns, corners and any capping or feature finishes.
